LEC warns public of legal action

Monrovia, Liberia:  The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has issued a stern warning to the public, cautioning against the unauthorized use of its corporate logo, which has now been officially registered as a trademark with the Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO).

Recently, numerous social media platforms have been using the logo and name of the Liberia Electricity Corporation, with many spreading misinformation about the institution to the public.

However, in a press statement released this week, LEC confirmed that its logo is now protected under Registration No. LR-T-2025-65, granting the corporation exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, and display the symbol across all platforms print, digital, broadcast, merchandise, and others.

The Corporation emphasized that any unapproved use of its logo now constitutes a violation of both national and international intellectual property laws.

These include the Trademark Act of Liberia (2008), the World Trade Organization’s TRIPS Agreement, and the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.

“It has come to our attention that some individuals are illegally using the LEC logo to defraud valued customers and mislead the public on important matters concerning the Corporation,” the release noted. “Effective immediately, any unauthorized use—including on social media, websites, promotional items, or merchandise will be met with legal action.”

LEC warned that under Section 37 of Liberia’s Trademark Act, wilful counterfeiting of a registered trademark is a criminal offense punishable by fines and/or imprisonment.

To prevent legal repercussions, the Corporation is urging all persons and entities currently using the logo without approval to cease immediately.

It also calls on those wishing to use the logo for legitimate purposes such as promotions, media coverage, or public education campaigns, to seek official permission, and that the Requests must be submitted in writing to the Legal Services Department of the Liberia Electricity Corporation, Waterside, Monrovia, Liberia, or through Email: mbrown@lecliberia.com

According to LEC, all applications will be reviewed according to its Brand-Use Guidelines, and Successful applicants will receive a formal licensing agreement specifying terms of use, duration, and any applicable fees.

The Corporation concluded by urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or unauthorized usage of its brand identity, reinforcing its commitment to protecting both its reputation and its customers.
