Liberia and China break ground for training facility at S.K.D.

The Governments of Liberia and China have broken ground here to construct a training center.
Monrovia, Liberia; August 26, 2025 – The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in partnership with the People’s Republic of China, has officially broken ground for the construction of a modern two-storey training facility at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
The initiative forms part of the China-aided Liberia Bamboo and Rattan Weaving, Fruit and Vegetable Planting, and Livestock Raising Technical Assistance Project.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony recently, the project’s team leader, Mr. Chen Yu Qiong, said the facility will directly support training programs in bamboo and rattan weaving, fruit and vegetable planting, and biogas technology.
Mr. Chen noted that once completed, the centre will provide a greatly improved working and living environment for both trainees and staff.
He disclosed that his team has two and a half years remaining under the current project cycle, adding that construction would begin immediately and be completed within one year.
Emphasizing the broader vision of the partnership, he said the project aims to equip Liberian youth with practical skills and entrepreneurial opportunities, enhancing employability and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
He assured that China remains committed to working closely with Liberia in cultivating a new generation of skilled leaders to drive youth development and modernization.
In response, Youth and Sports Minister Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu, expressed gratitude for China’s continued support, praising the quality of training already being delivered under the project.
According to him, the program is already transforming lives of young Liberians, with 40 youths currently undergoing training in weaving, planting, and livestock rearing.
The Minister further revealed that he had shared program updates and photos with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who has shown a strong interest in youth empowerment.
He announced plans to organize an interactive meeting between the trainees and trainers. Editing by Jonathan Browne
