Bong County Educator pushes for mandatory drug checks in all schools.

By Edwin N. Khakie

The President of the National Principals Association of Liberia (NPAL), Bong County Chapter, Mr. Philip N. L. Mulbah, has called for mandatory drug inspections across all schools in Liberia as part of efforts to curb the alarming spread of narcotics among young people.

Speaking Monday, August 25, 2025, at Liberia’s 178th Flag Day celebration hosted by the Bong County School System at the Gbarnga Administration Building, Mr. Mulbah warned that drug abuse is eating away at the country’s youthful population and requires urgent, coordinated action.

“I recommend that there should be drug inspections on every campus across Liberia. Let every principal, down to the least student, be inspected for drugs,” he said.

Mr. Mulbah, a two-time recipient of the Ministry of Education’s Best Teacher Award, argued that such inspections would deter drug use and expose those who attempt to smuggle or consume narcotics on campuses.

He also urged school administrators nationwide to hold biannual drug-awareness programs to educate students on the dangers of substance abuse.

In addition, Mr. Mulbah recommended renaming the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) to the “Liberia Anti-Drugs Agency,” saying the current name does not reflect the urgency of the country’s fight against drugs.

“Drugs have overtaken our country. We cannot continue with the name Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency, it’s not strong enough,” he stressed.

Mr. Mulbah’s remarks add to growing public concern over the rise of narcotics use in Liberia, particularly among school-aged youth, as the government faces mounting pressure to intensify its anti-drug strategies.
