Police investigate death of Nancy Musu Kiatamba

Monrovia, Liberia, May 27, 2025 – The Liberia National Police says it is investigating circumstances surrounding the arrest, release, and subsequent death of Ms. Nancy Musu Kiatamba, a resident of Vai Town, Old Road Community.
According to a press release, initial reports indicate that the late Ms. Kiatamba was apprehended and detained on May 9, 2025, by Inspector Saywon T. Wulah of Zone 3 Depot 1, following an alleged verbal altercation.
She was subsequently released on the same day, but on May 14, 2025, the LNP says it received a formal complaint from Ms. Moimeh Thomas, Ms. Kiatamba’s guardian, reporting her death and alleging that it was a result of an assault perpetrated by the officer involved.
The release says in response, the Inspector General of Police, Gregory Coleman, ordered an immediate administrative investigation led by the Professional Standards Department. Based on preliminary findings, Inspector Wulah has been recommended for interdiction in accordance with LNP regulations. Furthermore, the IGP has requested a forensic autopsy to scientifically determine the cause of death.
The LNP reiterates its commitment to due process and assures the public that this matter is being handled with strict adherence to established Police Administrative Instructions.
According to the Police, outcome of the ongoing investigation, along with results of the requested forensic autopsy, will guide any subsequent administrative measures or potential criminal proceedings, as deemed appropriate under the law. Editing by Jonathan Browne
