VP Boakai to Break Grounds in Voinjama for Roads
The people of Voinjama, Lofa County are expected to benefit from feeder roads, linking Voinjama to other towns and villages in the county. Vice President Joseph Boakai is to shortly lead a high level government delegation, including members of the Liberian Legislature to the county to break grounds for the pavement of 2.85kms streets in Voinjama before the Christmas celebrations.
The Voinjama streets project is being jointly financed by the governments of Liberia and Sweden under cost-sharing mechanism. Sweden is expected to provide US$2,179,043.00 to pave 2.56kms stretch of streets, while the Government of Liberia will provide US$3,256,279.00 to pave 4.30kms of city streets.
Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, Public Works Minister Samuel Kofi Woods said the total cost of the project is US$5,435,323.00, adding that the construction will be composed of reinforced concrete slabs with expansion joints and concrete drains. The duration of the project is estimated for three years.
Some of the roads expected to be paved include Voinjama to Barkedu; Voinjama to bolongoidu; Kugbemali to Voinjama; Jailamia to Voinjama; Lawalazu to Vezela, and Tanu Moina to Bajagizia, respectively. Other roads to be linked include Salayea to Zolowo, then to Makesu, and Salayea to Tinsu and Fassawalazu, among others.
Minister Woods explained that the project represents major component of government infrastructural strategy to expand urban renewal program outside Monrovia and address the plight of urban dwellers, who suffer environmental challenges and other difficulties of unpaved city streets, while still maintaining focus on rehabilitated primary, secondary and feeder roads across the country.
The Minister noted that besides the grounds breaking for pavement of roads in the county, VP Boakai will also dedicate 152.65km feeder roads in Lofa that were completely rehabilitated in 2012, and are currently benefiting hundreds of thousands of residents in that part of the country.
He added that the rehabilitation works included grading and construction of new concrete bridges, installation of reinforced concrete pipe curvets as well as box culverts. He said the investment is a fulfillment of government’s policy to change all log bridges in rural areas to reinforced concrete bridges and all corrugated metal culverts to concretes.
