Launching the Anti-Lying Campaign
A lot of Christians in this land are vehemently opposed to same-sex marriage or relationship. In fact, some of them have taken it as a Christian service or mandate to launch an all-out campaign against it, with some saying that God called them in a special way and instructed them to lead the campaign.
They indicate that they are fighting God’s battle, as they want to help God to rid this land of that abominable act. Some have even gone to the extent of campaigning to declare Liberia a Christian nation, as if by declaring it on paper would automatically make everyone God-fearing people in the land.
Anti-gay campaigners have gone on radio and TV and have written in newspapers about their unwavering commitment to the cause of God. In this case, the uncompromising fight against same-sex marriage. A common story cited is the one about Sodom and Gomorrah, two cities destroyed by God as a result of abominable acts, including sodomy.
I commend those determined to campaign against homosexual relationships. Their condemnation of homosexuals is in line with what the Bible teaches, although some of them use methods that I consider un-Christ-like, especially those who engage in violence to stop the act or any discussion about it. They do it as if Christ were a gangster or rebel leader who has instructed them to execute a violent campaign. I refuse to believe that Jesus is that kind of person or that he welcomes their violent behavior.
In addition to that, what puzzles me more in all this is that those who are so hot to launch anti-gay campaigns because, according to them, God has called them and instructed them to carry out that campaign are unwilling to launch the same campaign against a lying tongue, as if God didn’t consider lying a serious sin.
Where is the active, national campaign against lying, with Christians going on radio and TV to be uncompromising and zealous as they are about the act of homosexualism? Oh, so God really hates homosexualism but likes lying. Or does it mean that a lying tongue is a less serious sin than homosexualism?
If the zeal and commitment are there to launch a national campaign against a gay relationship or marriage, why don’t we see the same zeal and commitment for other sins? Why is this lack of zeal on the part of those launching anti-homosexual campaigns?
Lying tongues are all over the place. Church leaders, including pastors and deacons, lie day and night. Ordinary members lie all the time. Government officials, including the very heads, lie to their international partners all the time. They lie to the citizens continuously. Husbands lie to their wives; wives lie to their husbands. Boyfriends lie to girlfriends, and girlfriends lie to boyfriends. Businesspeople lie all the time. Teachers lie, and students lie. It is a rampant thing.
Is God not angry about this other sin? Is God not serious about it? Is a lying tongue not an abomination? I don’t understand. Why are people fond of campaigning against certain abominable acts, while forgetting about or winking at others? Why is this so, my people?
We read in Revelations 21:9 that all liars will have their part in the Lake of Fire. Why isn’t there any campaign against a lying tongue, if lying is so serious that liars will go to hell?
In listing the sins that will cause people not to go to heaven, the Apostle Paul mentions lying in I Corinthians 6:9-10. What isn’t there any campaign against lying tongues, my people?
In Proverbs 6:16-19, the Bible mentions seven acts or things that God hates. He considers them abominable. The second thing in the list is a lying tongue. The sixth thing is a false witness that speaks lies, which is the same as the second thing – a lying tongue. If God really hates a lying tongue,as the Bible is indicating, aren’t those launching anti-gay campaigns aware of this other abominable sin?
To conclude, I encourage all those who are fond of launching campaigns against same-sex relationships or are quick to seek one million signatures to declare Liberia a Christian nation to do the same with lying. This is their challenge. They should not be hot on one specific sin and wink at the others. Let them launch an anti-lying national campaign, too. Can they do it? Will they do it, or will they only have the energy for anti-gay campaigns? So, sin da na sin again?
Seriously, my people, aren’t these points to ponder?
