54th Legislature extols UNMIL in Joint Resolution

Members of the 54th Liberian Legislature have adopted a Joint Resolution here, commending the United Nations for its support to peace, stability, and recovery in the last fourteen (14) years.

Titled “A Joint Resolution LEG-002/2018 Adopted By The Senate and The Honorable House of Representatives in its Regular Session, Commending UNMIL For Enormous Contributions Made Towards Liberia’s Peace and Development”; it also extols the Special Representative of the Secretary General, Farid Zarif, his Deputies and all present and past UNMIL staff for their committed role towards Liberia’s political and economic transformation, reconciliation and peace consolidation.

The Plenary of the House endorsed the Joint Resolution on Tuesday, 20 March during its session and forwarded it to the Liberian Senate. The resolution recognizes UNMIL’s continuous intervention, which transformed the country from a failed state to a country of peace and a proud member of the comity of nations.

The decision of the Senate and the House is predicated on the UNSCR 2333 of December 2016 which authorized the final closure and departure of UNMIL on 31 March 2018.

The Lawmakers, in their Joint Resolution also encourage the UN Security Council to continue to keep Liberia on its top priority agenda with focus on supporting the consolidation of the new democratic government of President George Manneh Weah, and to put in place a strong political monitoring mechanism to advise the UN Headquarters on political development in Liberia.
