Ellen Becomes Liberia’s Fire Marshall

The Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) has commissioned President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as Fire Marshall of Liberia. In many areas, the fire marshal is responsible for enforcing laws concerning flammable materials.

LNFS conferred the honor on the President for her dedicated support to the Fire Service and being the first Liberian sitting Head of State to visit the entity during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The Liberian leader has gone to the LNFS office on Ashmum Street to thank the staff for a job well done during the year 2012 in serving the public. Upon the President’s arrival, fire fighters were seen in joyous mood to receive her.

The President thanked the LNFS for the manner in which they have managed the entity and fought fire incidents in the city. She said government will continue to support the Liberia National Fire Service and provided a check for US$5,000 as Christmas gift for the employees.

Receiving the donation, he Director of the LNFS G. Warsuwah Barvoul thanked the President and encouraged her to provide sustained support for the Fire Service.

Director Barvoul called for more sensitization, among Liberians to help reduce fire incidents around the country. He however recommended for residents to adapt the use of Chinese lights instead of candle lights to avoid fire disasters in their respective homes.

He said President Sirleaf deserves the commission as Liberia’s Fire Marshal for her commitment to the service, and noted that many Liberians overlooked the efforts of fighters.

The State Fire Marshall (SFM) is to promote public health and safety and to reduce hazards to life, limb and property. The SFM office performs its duties through inspections and investigations, including public awareness program and fire protection codes.
