President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has donated three 3.5 KVA Generators to three police depots in Paynesville City, outside Monrovia. The depots include LNP Zone 5 depots 1, 2 and 3, covering Cowfield Duport Road, Soul Clinic and Gobachop communities, respectively. Police deployed there have been using candles and Chinese lights at night due to lack of electricity.

Making the presentation on behalf of the President, the Deputy Director for Procurement at the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, Toe Wesseh said security for the people is necessary so those who are responsible to providing such services need to work in an encouraging environment.

Mr. Wesseh noted that the President’s gesture comes in the wake of an appeal from the general commander of the Zone 5 depots. He said President Sirleaf saw logic in the police commander’s request and therefore, responded promptly. The commander of the depots, Chief Superintendent Prince Gittens lauded the President for keeping her promise.

Gittens said that since he took office on August 10, 2012, the depots have been in darkness, disclosing that police officers were using candle lights and Chinese lights to serve the public. The police commander noted that the President’s intervention has eased the burden of the heads of the police from buying candles, which he described as dangerous.

In remarks, the newly appointed City Mayor of Paynesville, Cyvette Gibson thanked the President for the gesture and assured that the Paynesville City police and the Liberia National Police will work together to fight crimes.
